This short booklet discusses some of the thinking that led to the Conventional Canvas series. ....

This group of paintings illustrates the process in which the canvas comes off the stretcher during a period of my work.

Back in 1971 I was concerned with grammar --- marks, line, colour --- and with the ambiguity of layered space. Gradually this led to an interest in the conventions of the format of traditional painting --- rectangular support, flat surface of stretched canvas, hand-applied paint. In the later paintings in which the canvas takes new shapes and even three-dimensional form, these conventions are acknowledged in various ways: the axes are drawn on the painting, or the wooden stretcher is partially exposed...
