In my studio I recently came across a folder containing five charcoal sketches from the seventies in which the view to the sea and Kapiti Island was totally uninterrupted by development and the hills seen from my parents' dining-room window were bush-covered, pine trees not yet intruding. The sketches, scanned, scaled up, and printed in permanent inks on canvas form the background for the paintings.
