In my studio I recently came across a folder containing five charcoal sketches from the seventies in which the view to the sea and Kapiti Island was totally uninterrupted by development and the hills seen from the dining-room window were bush-covered, pine trees not yet intruding. The sketches, scanned, scaled up, and printed in permanent inks on canvas form the background for the paintings.
